Net Control tips

1. Do not transmit until you know what to say
2. Do not unkey until you have given a clear directive of what response you expect from those on frequency

• When calling the roll call, simply call the roll. eg.
  • say: Calling VE3ZZZ
  • not: This is VE3NCS calling VE3ZZZ Sally, are you on frequency? Please come back to George VE3NCS, November Charlie Sierra, your net control station for tonight's Amateur Radio Emergency Services Net, over to you.
• Remember that you are in charge of all activities on YOUR net.
  • If you miss a call on the list, there is an appropriate spot later in the net for them to check in.
  • If you cannot hear a station on a simplex net, there is an appropriate spot later in the net for relays to assist.
  • Inform participants of inappropriate behaviour.
    • If you ask for callsigns only, and they give more than 6 letters, remind them of what you asked for.
    • If you call someone and another person jumps in, inform them of their appropriate time for their comments.
  • The words "BREAK BREAK" followed by a callsign indicates an emergency situation. Advise all that the net is suspended and handle the emergency.
  • The word "CONTACT" means an aviator is hand cranking a propeller. Please stand clear of the aeroplane.
  • Remember that you direct YOUR net. Whatever you do is by definition correct during YOUR net. Only your superior can tell you to change things. Other remarks should be made privately or discussed after the net.
